Cake baking with kids! So my kiddo wanted me to bake a cake for him and wanted to help me out too. The first thought that came to my mind was MESS!!
I took out the Pillsbury readymade cake mix and we set to work. I threw all the ingredients in the container and the final stirring (round n round) was done by Ram.
Now we had to choose the mould – round? Square? Heart shape ? teddy?
And the teddy shape won !!! (obviously)
The amazement on his face while I poured the mixture into the mould was so much fun to watch!! Cake baking with kids can be so delightful.
Now we put the mould into the oven and waited for 30 minutes.
The cake turned out just perfect and it was greeted with a lot of shrieking and dancing when we took it out n cut it. Yummy it was !!! i just added the Kellogs’ Honey Rings to mark the eyes and nose. you can use gems… but i was out of it so had to choose an alternative !
Here, the kids get introduced to 2 things –
- What all ingredients is the cake made up of
- Introduction to various food items, their texture, taste, color, shape etc.
e.g. my kid was introduced to “oil” for the first time … he wanted to taste it and I let him…. What harm could it do? He dint like it. I had to explain to him that we don’t eat oil, we make food with its help.
I keep asking him on n off, what all food items we used to bake the cake, he remembers oil, flour, eggs, but forgets to tell me sugar every time…. He will come to it someday surely.
Here is another pic of cake baking session – my niece and my mom:
We don’t realize it but every daily activity that we do – be it in the kitchen or doing laundry, kids learn everywhere, we just need ways to enhance their learning experience by letting them be a part of it in some way, rather than shooing them off. And yes, talking to them and answering the endless questions !!!
